My boy visited his new, temporary school today. It’s called Bishop Feild and it’s in the heart of downtown St. John ‘s. It’s the oldest school in the province, having been established in 1844, and in the past its halls were graced by the likes of Joey Smallwood and John Crosby. My favourite part is that it’s only a 5 minute walk from our house.
The kids seemed to be waiting for him. They applauded as he stood in the doorway, stiff and worried. I’m sure it felt strange and confusing to be applauded for simply showing up, but I felt happy for him anyway. Though stiff, he was still smiling with the air of someone who knows he’s anticipated, who understands on some level that this experience is full of a new and spacious potential.
Supposedly, his teacher plays the ukulele like the pied piper to lead her class to various events in the school. She wears a large bandana and some serious, leather boots.
I think he’s going to love it here.
